Yulier Rodriguez Perez his street art is meant to portray the struggles of Cuban life. “There is a lot of discontent already because of many shortages. It is discontent, sadness, depression, sometimes frustration of not being able to be,” he said. Though his murals seem to appear everywhere, Pérez has criteria for his citywide canvases. He searches for publicly owned properties, avoiding particulares: privately owned buildings. The buildings must be somewhat deteriorated. In other words, according to his standards, they must need transformation. "It is important to me that the urban artist express himself freely, not restricted by anyone, not a gallery, not a government," said the 27-year-old artist, whose full name is Yulier Rodríguez Pérez.

I rented a taxi in Havana and parked it in front of Rodriguez’ art. I wanted a convertible so that I could get a good photograph of the art. This piece is 1100% covered in thread. The color of the Pontiac Chieftain is perfect with the art. I used 92 different colors of thread in the art.

The convertible sold in 1952 with prices of $2,300 and $2,445.

Thread Stories

I have been an artist all of my life. I am an ASID Interior Designer, Painter, Photographer, and Fiber Artist.

My technique - Thread Stories - is a process based on printing my photographs on fabric and creating a realistic representation of the subject in thread. The images are covered 100% in thread. If I am creating a large piece of art, I may have over 150 hours in the piece and over 250 colors of thread.

I am an Encaustic artist. The contrast between smooth wax and textured thread involves the viewers eye, bringing them into the art story being told.

I paint using oils and acrylics. I paint portraits as well as still life art. My art is based on realism.

My Contemporary Fiber Structures are based on Japanese and Chinese Arts. I include Washi paper, Katagami, Shashiko and Chinese Brushstroke in my art. I work in two and three-dimensional forms.

I have been exhibited in Europe, The United States, Australia, and Asia. My work has been exhibited in Museums and three times at the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.
