Oregon myrtle (Umbellularia californica) native to Oregon and California is also known as Pepper wood, Spice tree or Bay Laurel. The tree grows very slowly at most 12 inches per year. Size ranges from 60 to 120 feet which means it can take up to 120 years to reach full growth.
Myrtle has beautiful color, spicy aroma, and figure. Even in the same piece of wood colors can range from golden yellow, green, black, brown, tan, and sometimes violet. This piece of myrtle is from southern Oregon.
Malachite is a bright green mineral with copper hydroxyl carbonite. It typically comes from weathered copper ore. Malachite is found in the Southwestern US especially in Arizona.
The finish contains five coats of Tung oil with varnish; sanded after each coat. Tung oil brings out the unique characteristics of the wood.
