This is an accent or occasional table with Australian opal and copper inlay. Milo or “Thespesia populnea” is also referred as Pacific rosewood. It is a small tree that is along the coast in many parts of the world. It can grow as high as thirty-three feet but gets not larger than eleven to twelve inches in diameter. The heartwood is ranges from dark red brown to a chocolate brown. This Milo is from Hawaii where it was brought to the islands by explorers and tradesmen.
Australian opal is the accent stone inlayed with copper. Opal is a hydrated form of silica that can range up to twenty-one percent of the weight. It is typically between six and ten percent. The structure of opal causes it to diffract light which is where the color comes from. Most of the Australian opal comes from the southern part of the country. Australia is one of the biggest sources of opal. Copper is also used as an inlay throughout the table. It is very malleable and has a beautiful reddish-brown color. It is found in multiple states in the U.S. including Utah, Arizona, Montana, Michigan, and New Mexico.
The metal legs were designed by Rick Griggs. They were fabricated and powder-coated in Phoenix.
The finish contains four coats of Tung oil; carefully sanded after each coat. Tung oil brings out the unique characteristics of the milo. Wood does expand and contract making it subject to slight checking, cracking and movement. To maintain the beauty of the milo avoid using cleaning solutions instead use water in a damp rag. Remove the excess moisture with a clean towel. For polishing a beeswax solution such as Howard Feed-N-Wax or Artisan Lemon Oil Wax.
