This unique two-tier claro walnut burl table with green turquoise and copper inlay. The table dimensions are:
Upper Lower
Length: 22 ¼” 28”
Width: 16” 22”
Height: 26 ¼”
Claro Walnut Burl, Juglans hindsi, is found in Northern California and Oregon. A variation is also found in the eastern United States. The most common source is from orchards but also from walnut that has been used for ornamental purposes. The wood is marbled with violet, brown and black streaks swirling around burl “eyes”. Most burls grow under the ground attaching to the roots of the tree. They are not typically not found until the tree dies or falls over. This burl is from Oregon.
The stone inlay is green turquoise from Nevada which is a cryptocrystalline mineral that is hydrated phosphate of copper and aluminum. Copper is also part of the inlay. It is typically found in multiple states in the U.S. including Utah, Arizona, Montana, Michigan and New Mexico. Copper is very malleable and has a beautiful reddish-brown color that accents the Claro Walnut Burl.
The finish contains four coats of Tung oil; sanded after each coat. Tung oil brings out the unique characteristics of the claro walnut. Wood does expand and contract making it subject to slight checking, cracking and movement. To minimize wood movement cracking, checking or slight warping and for polishing use a beeswax solution such as Howard Feed-N-Wax or Artisan Lemon Oil Wax is good.
