Kate Leibrand is an interdisciplinary artist living in Philadelphia, working with large scale fibers since 2013. Using acrylic felt, made from recycled plastic water bottles, her labor-intensive process includes cutting, painting, folding, stitching, and tacking thousands of fabric elements onto a wood backing. The dense mass of fabric forms are inspired by her interest in growths of all kinds, drawing inspiration from undulating forms in nature as well as the body. Leibrand's interests in dichotomies such as inside/outside, hidden/exposed, and micro/macro, lead her to incorporate intimate details in all of her work, as moments of surprise and wonder for the viewer to find.
