Title: Wind through the Trees
Location: Silverton, Colorado

Series of 25

Archival pigment giclee print on Epson Baryta Fine Art Paper

The photograph depicts a landscape scene composed with a painterly, almost impressionistic style. Dominating the left side of the composition is a tall, slender, dark tree, reminiscent of a cypress, which stretches skyward. This contrasts with the right side of the image, where a grove of trees or bushes clad in warm autumnal yellows and golds sprawls across the canvas. The trees gently recede into the distance along a sloping terrain.

The background is less defined and appears to be a hilly vista, shrouded in a soft haze that suggests a misty atmosphere. The sky occupies the upper portion of the composition, rendered in muted tones, indicating an interlude between rain showers when the sun is not fully present or obscured by clouds, giving the entire scene a subdued, serene quality.

The overall digital brushstrokes are broad and gestural, creating a textured effect which gives the impression of movement within the foliage and the clouds. There is a visible interplay of light and shadow throughout the scene, imbuing the landscape with a sense of depth and volume. The use of light suggests a focal point where the sky seems brightest, possibly hinting at the sun's location behind the clouds. The artwork captures the essence of a tranquil landscape with dynamic textures and a rich, earthy palette.

Impressionist and atmospheric Landscape Photography

Jay Mason has an established eye for landscapes and the nuanced color palettes they offer. His body of work is bound by a similar subject matter - focusing on nature and its interaction with weather, light, and human intervention.

His skill for capturing scenes of bucolic tranquility, as well as more deserted, melancholy settings all effectually resonate a particular feeling, whether it be serene calm or somber isolation. Although each work has its unique mood, they all share a common thread of being immersive and atmospheric. His familiar treatment of skies; handling light, clouds, and subtle shifts in color is consistent across all pieces. The landscapes use of color is versatile but retains a specific tonal integrity that defines his work.
