About: Willow tree on top of a willow tree on top of a willow tree - this abstract interpretation of this iconic tree is so artistically expressed in this rug. This rug is one of the moodiest and most majestic rug we've ever seen in my life. This is exactly the type of rug Ralph Lauren has in his homes/retail spaces. This is the type of piece you see in 10,000+ square feet mansions on the East Coast of the United States because these are the clients that got first pick of fine antique rugs when the rug shipments arrived solely due to proximity and geographical location as these ships stopped and unloaded their cargo on the Eastern coast receiving docks. These are the types of pieces that high-end British and English designers designed for these masterful weavers to weave back in the late 1800's. These are the pieces that rug collectors, rug enthusiasts, and rug lovers alike look for; pieces where the drawing/design, color palette and dyes, weave/quality, and soul of the rug are all not only in harmony - but at their best. This piece is deep, rich, lustrous, and downright sinful. When really looking at this piece, you get lost the same way you do looking into the stars on a dark night. This piece reminds me of the depths of the ocean; dark, mysterious, and intriguing, or into the unknown universe. There is no other rug weaving village in the world that could pull this piece off other than this village in the greatest rug weaving country in the world. This is the epitome of what rugs from this district are known for; incredible wool, incredible weave, and incredible artistic soul in their pieces. The deep blue in this rug is so deep and ink-like, the rosey-berry in the border is soft but rich, and the camel, mocha, chocolate, and other earthy tones really ground this piece. Alas, all of these colors come together to allow the unusual blues and soft teal to highlight nearly every flower in this rug. This color consists of shades and variations of every shade in the spectrum in nearly every knot. Notice in the border that it has 4 corners vase-motifs that don't repeat again until in an otherwise repeating border pattern; this is attention to detail. The amount of space in the field is remarkable. How else do you get this sensational and iconic willow tree motifs and hybrid willow-tree motifs to shine and sprawl down the way willow trees encompass and protect everything under their umbrella of vines and branches. How do you explain the irregular variations of dyes randomly jetting through the field of the rug? This is called "abrash" and it is my #1 element in antique village rugs. It is the birthmark of this rug and should be celebrated. Lastly, this wool is second to none. The quality is like walking on a pile of plush lamb wool because that is exactly what you're doing. This wool is better than New Zealand wool, and you will feel the difference. It is almost oily due to the lanolin still in the rug, this of course doesn't only repel dirt, but it gives your touch a sense of luxury as well as your eyes - as it adds a nice sheen to the entire piece. These select pieces are often compared to (and often inspired by) famous poetry and song. Reason being that many of these women villagers would sing and recite poetry during their weavings together. The art of hand-weaving is very much affected by the arts, architecture, nature, etc. For those that don't know rugs very well, you can see the appeal in this piece on a subconscious level - notice the balance, and although filled with a lot of lush and exotic floral and vine motifs, still easy for your eyes to digest. And of course, to the trained eye, it is infinitely attractive because we know what it took to make rugs like this. The countless hours of sheering, cleaning, sorting, spinning, and dying the wool, then of course weaving - sometimes it could take an entire village to create one piece as there were so many respective parts to the entire process. It is a shame because these pictures don't do ANYWHERE NEAR the justice of this piece. If you think this rug is beautiful from the pictures, you will be aside yourself when you receive it in person in shock of just how much more lovely it is in person. Of course, pictures can never capture the depth and richness in these pieces - you are in for a very pleasant surprise when you receive this piece in person. Let me know if you have any questions at all!
This rug is one-of-a-kind, only one available. Because of the nature and age of these older/antique handmade pieces, irregularities and age-related wear are likely to exist and are not considered defects.
We always recommend a high-quality custom cut pad for any and all rugs; these pads are made for hand-knotted rugs. They create a body and support the knots of the rug, as well as prevent it from slipping and sliding. If you do get the pad as well; due to its size we will have to combine two pads to perfectly fit this piece - we do this all the time for these oversized pieces!
