Custom artwork for large 25 foot stairwell in art collector’s new luxury villa in Costa Rica. Abstract landscape design meant to evoke feelings of serenity and peace in addition to the environment with lush rolling hills of jungle and Pacific Ocean in view. I invited collector to also meditate and share impressions to inform the vibe of the artwork. I shared many sketches and it was a collaborative process. Art piece also utilizes color palette to focus on texture and work with existing villa decor. Artwork created with materials to endure climate of high humidity and heat. While monochromatic I combined various techniques including weaving, macrame, embroidery to create texture and form. The entire piece is stitched together by hand. I worked in sections due to the large scale.

Custom orders will go through a similar process: budget, size, materials, sketches, site specific details, timing, and additional information to inform the final piece.

Meditative mixed media fiber art guided by breath

Filiz Soyak is an interdisciplinary artist exploring themes of identity, memory, and time through painting, drawing, clay, fiber, and installation. After becoming a mother in 2016, her work turned further inward seeking meaning through stillness and by connecting to her intuition. Meditation and breath have become integral practices in her work.
Filiz was born in 1979 in Belgium to a Turkish father and Swedish mother. She spent most of her childhood in Belgium and Japan, before moving to the Northeast of the United States. Filiz found her comfort in creating early on, and art became the language that allowed her to process and adapt to so many different experiences.
Filiz earned a B.A. in Visual Art from the University of Vermont in 2001, followed by an M.Ed. in Visual Art Education from Lesley University in 2008. From 2004-2008 Filiz was a full-time resident and an active community member of the historical Fort Point Arts Community in Boston, Massachusetts. After spending a year in Amman, Jordan, then another year in Barbados, teaching art and design, Filiz landed in Brooklyn, New York in 2010. In 2017 she moved with her husband and young daughter from Brooklyn, to Hudson, New York to be closer to nature and to establish a slower, more grounded and conscious lifestyle.
