This coffee table was an early piece for Geoff McKonly, built in 2015. The curvature in the legs is emblematic of his work as a boat builder and shows off his love of curves. This coffee table, constructed from black walnut, is an experimental use of the butterfly key as a joinery element to turn two pieces of walnut into one. The butterfly keys are visible in the top of the table. This element is typically used to stabilize checks or cracks in slabs, but Geoff was interested to see how it would function as a joint between two sections. The curvature in the legs and base is designed to produce a lighter feeling in contrast to the solid top. The top has the appearance of floating about the base and has a heavy bevel around the sides to give it a lighter feel. The table is incredibly solid. It was recently refinished and refreshed to bring it back to it's originally beauty.
