Venice – a canvas as vivid as the memories it holds. Each stroke is a step along an accidental path, from a fleeting San Francisco dream to the sun-drenched avenues of Venice, CA. This piece tells a story of transformation, not just of a once overlooked neighborhood, but of
In 2001, my heart set on San Francisco, my life rerouted by a single, spontaneous 'OK.' I instead landed in the arms of Venice, a place where creativity flowed as freely as the fog during June gloom. The decision to stay was as unexpected as it was definitive – a call, a conversation, and 'OK’, and all of a sudden my car pivoted from SF back to Socal.
Back then Abbot Kinney was empty. There was the coffee shop, the liquor store and the stripes in an eyeglass storefront that was the first signal—a prelude to the street's blossoming future.
Each return to Venice was a homecoming, each trip to the farmers market, and every bike ride. The painting revels in the colors of those days, the exhilaration of youth, the saltwater and pomelos, and the richness of a community in the midst of discovery.
The tapestry of Venice is woven with stories: from unexpected friendships, like the one that began with a cat named Stevens and meeting my neighbor, Zach Galifianakis, for the first time covered in grass blades, to the serendipitous party crashing that led to bonds still held dear. San Juan and Electric – that was my habitat. Electric it was.
‘Venice’ is a swath of personal history, and the freedom of youth captured in color and form. It's a celebration of the wild, the wacky, and the wonderful turns of life that come when we embrace the unexpected — with an ‘OK.’ For anyone who’s ever found joy in the detours, this painting is for you – a memento of being unabashedly young, bright, and a touch reckless, in a place that danced to the same vibrant beat.
