Tumbleweed II (Soul Shaker) 75 x 113 cm, acrylic, pigment print on Arches Aquarelle, 2017
While spending time in California, Arizona and New Mexico, Gordon became immersed in the creativity, harmony and spiritual vision of the Native American Indian culture. Conversely, he was exposed to the romance, anarchy and chaotic violence disseminated in 20th century Wild West iconography.
Using symbolism from petroglyphs and petroforms as central components to his work, Gordon reveals a pictorial life-force of the Native Indians while challenging preconceptions of the American West.
Through paint, photography, montage and mixed media, ’Soul Shaker’ bridges the gap between the past and present, capturing a raw energy within an uncompromising image dynamic with pure colour, graphic intensity and depth.
The shapes, compositions and narratives seek to make a connection beneath the surface, creating a visual language that resonates with our individual life cycle and the wider global challenges we face today - projecting themes, visuals and messages from tribes who lived in harmony with the earth and its precious resources.
