Ink on Chinese mulberry paper, on a Fabriano cartridge substrate (120gsm) on birch panel.
Framed in a black stained wood frame.
The enso (circle) is a motif that recurs in my paintings. It is practice of drawing a circle with a single uninhibited brushstroke to express absolute enlightenment, a single moment in time, strength, elegance, the universe and the void.
It is when my mind is free to simply let myself create through the physical body. Particularly at this scale. It is a symbol rich in associations. For me it is also an act of meditation.
I approached this piece with the intention of creating a circle that is completed by the gilding of the drips of ink as the brush is brought to the paper before starting the circle. To signify the potential of the ink.
