Melissa Mary Jenkins is an abstract artist and natural ink maker based both in Erin and Bancroft, Ontario. Melissa’s abstract work reflects the strong pull of the natural world encircling her. She “thinks in paintings” and crafting ink from her natural surroundings creates a full circle experience for Melissa.
Melissa crafted the emerald green ink from goldenrod flowers that she foraged in the wild fields surrounding her studio. She then mixed an iron acetate mixture created from rusty nails into the yellow goldenrod ink to transform the ink into green. To create the aqua ink, Melissa soaked copper bits in vinegar and salt and after a few weeks, this vibrant turquoise ink formed. Finally, Melissa created an ink from coffee grinds and painted the coffee onto a coffee mug to create the circles.
