The Sheriff's Department Building in New City.
The sculpture depicts a community of people
gathered on a brushed stainless-steel raised panel
that is 8 feet by 8 feet. The panel has a single figure
missing, cut out from the community group. This
figure is away from the community and isolated
above the group in the square.
The sculptural statement is: This person is away
from the community but has a place (the cut-out)
within the community to which they may return and
fit back into their particular space.
It’s much like a puzzle piece that fits into the main
puzzle.
I have selected a variation of the international
symbols for man, woman, girl and boy in keeping
with the makeup of Rockland County, “a microcosm
of racial, ethnic and cultural diversity.”
The use of human figures enables everyone
viewing the sculpture to identify with it and hopefully
experience the feeling of isolation but with the
eternal hope of returning to the community. The
missing figure could be interpreted as anyone away
from the community — a missing person, a
kidnapped child, a person in jail, etc. Each viewer
will be able to make up a personal story, using the
sculpture as a guide.
