The Ascension Art Instillation - Paradise, CA
In 2018, the Bomgardener family lost their home in the Camp Fire in Paradise, California. One of the most beloved features of their home, their family library which was most frequently used by their son who has autism and is an avid reader, was also lost in the fire. A friend of the family who had seen Shane’s work reached out to him for support. Together with the family, they collaboratively planned an event that would be publicized on social media to raise awareness for the family’s go fund me to restore their son’s library. At the site of what was once their family home, amidst the ash and debris, Shane got to work. Arising from the rubble, and appearing to be floating mid-air, painted on an acrylic sheet suspended from a steel stand that supported it, and painted in ultraviolet reflective paint, the luminescent image of Jesus emerged alongside geometric shapes also painted to reflect UV light, which gave the whole atmosphere where the project took place a powerful sense of arising hope amidst the chaos and destruction. The mother of the home had shared with Shane prior to the installation that it was her ability to focus on Jesus that had carried her through that dark day as she and her family fled their home.
