This piece was inspired by Alma Woodsey Thomas, a Black artist who became known for her colourful, abstract paintings that she created after retiring from a teaching career. Featuring shades of blue on a pale pink backdrop (a twist on her “Garden of Blue” painting), this piece is reminiscent of a blue pool of water- fragmented by refracting light.
“Through color, I have sought to concentrate on beauty and happiness, rather than on man’s inhumanity to man.”
-Alma W. Thomas
Fact about Alma: She was the first woman in America to receive a bachelor’s degree in art (in her 30s nonetheless!) and her artwork was hung in the white house during the Obama era.
