This work is part of the Mantra series and contains the mantra TAKE THE FIRST STEP, which was written, scraped, collaged, scratched, and inscribed into each layer of the work. Similar to a personal mantra that is embedded deeply in you and explored during meditation, each mantra painting is the embodiment of the energy of a particular mantra.
The process entails applying at least a dozen layers of paint that were repeatedly covered, scratched through, and peeled back, representing the process of introspection that takes place during meditation.
Color blocks represent areas of contemplation during meditation (your relationships, your past, your hopes, your fears, etc.). These containers hold the mantra and are areas for the mind to explore. The color blocks serve as boundaries and barriers, yet there is an interplay between the colors, magnifying the positive and negative space, and providing contrast.
Scratches and marks represent digging through the layers to get to the truth.
The power of the mantra is amplified in each painting by rich, bold jewel tones.
Metallic and iridescent materials represent the treasures waiting to be uncovered inside you during quiet contemplation. Additionally, the reflective surfaces are a mirror, bouncing off light and revealing what is in front of it.
My other works - the Rock Garden and Intention Stone series - share the same purpose of encouraging meditation and quiet contemplation.
As a yoga teacher, I know that yoga isn't just practiced on the mat. It is my hope that having my paintings in your home inspires your meditation practice and reminds you to breathe while focusing on living a balanced, positive, and peaceful life.
