My work has been inspired by the ordinary moments and everyday objects surrounding us. I think of my photographs as unfinished interpretations of everyday life.
Suzana Stamenovic was born in Belgrade, Serbia, where she began creating art as a child, creating her own comic books and developing photographs in her grandmother's pantry. Her first black and white images came to life in the back of the kitchen, where the smell of homemade jams blended with the excitement of seeing pictures develop.
In 1991, when war broke out in the former Yugoslavia, Suzana immigrated to Canada, where she went to study art in Vancouver, BC. She graduated with a degree in Graphic Design and Illustration.
Suzana immersed herself in a 16-year career as a computer game artist, and then photography re-emerged as her great love. In 2010 she became a full-time photographer and opened her own photography studio.
All of Suzana's work illustrates her overarching creative vision. With her photographs, she strives to capture the feeling of space. That space might be open or enclosed; it might be found in a person or an object. She uses a documentary approach when taking pictures, and editing is where she is most creative, where her eye as a painter emerges. The silence and calm in her photographs result from a reductive process through which the artist removes noise and distraction and thus allows viewers to find their personal story in her work.
