This monumental wall sculpture titled "Strata", measures 40' wide x 9' high x 10" deep and is made from gold, silver and copper anodized aluminum. It resides in the lobby of the Key Tower Building at Public Square, downtown Cleveland. Key Tower, at 57 stories high, is the tallest building in Ohio. Designed by world-renowned architect Cesar Pelli, the building is the perfect blend of classic skyscraper and modern aesthetics.
The client having newly purchased the building wished to renovate the lobby, featuring commissioned permanent pieces that would be open to the public. Acting as a museum of sorts, the space was designed to engage the public and bring the community into one of Cleveland’s most iconic buildings. Our goal was to produce the centerpiece of the client's collection and create a new iconic artwork where once hung James Rosenquist's "F-111" and David Salle's "Songs for Sale".
The desired design perimeters given by the art consultant and client was for the artwork to be 30-40 feet wide by 10 feet high. The client wanted the sculpture to include a large mixture of metal colors such as gold, silver, copper, brass and zinc. A key design consideration was the area where the art was being installed had 7 types of pink marble, so ideally the artwork would need to complement the existing marble. The desire for a mixture of metals along with the lines of the iconic building, set us on the path to creating something with an art deco, modern feel.
