Sentinel. A painted metal sculpture by RJ Art

Sentinel suggests standing, observing, reconnaissance. In a larger size the figure becomes kinetic and it will bend and sway with the wind. The reflected images and movement mimic surrounding nature. The painted figures on the sculpture are two conjoined monochromatic shapes of grey and black. Shapes and placement are identical on each side but the black and grey shapes have exchanged their colors from side to side.

Limited edition of six (6). Sculptures are formed from single sheets of metal and then painted with colorful images.

Sculptures are formed from single sheets of metal (stainless steel) and then finished using paints and processes identical to those found in automotive and aerospace applications. This provides the resilience, quality, and low-maintenance feature for all of these works.

Pieces can be assembled with other complementary ones to create new works with added tension, interaction, and intrigue. All are suitable for outside placement .

Sentinel, when paired with Bold creates the new sculpture Namaste, as shown in the context images. The large version of Namaste is a kinetic sculpture, suitable for garden and park placement, and it is shown as an available product in our listings .

The other images include various perspectives of Sentinel as well as arrangements with the other sculptures of this series.

Note: The base size and form of the final, finished sculpture is as shown in the first product image. The base design has evolved during development of the finished sculpture, and some images show bases of earlier versions with slightly different diameter and height.

Collection: Curved Space Sculptures

Transformation of the space from 2D to 3D radically defines perception. Use of “curved space” is a convenient description of spatial transformation and it uses terminology from physics and astronomy about space and gravity .
Inspiration for this work comes from observing the natural world – it’s form, motion, structural substance, and properties of natural light. The sculptures are studies in positive and negative space balance, and the transformations of spatial relationships of painted figures on curved surfaces.
The sculptures are non-objective and don’t represent any specific thing in particular, but they stir emotions and impressions that are unique to one’s life experience.
In this spirit all sculptures are made for interior as well as exterior use . Pieces can be displayed individually, or assembled with others of the series to form more complex sculptures.

All of the works in this series usually are made first at studio size (e.g., 12 to 20 inch high), but they can be scaled readily to five (5) feet high. Namaste, the large scale sculpture in our listing, is an example approxiimately (4) ft in height. The initial Namaste sculpture is currently exhibited at Artscape7/Fayetteville NC.

Sizes of all the pieces in this series can be scaled to approximately seven (7) feet high with available commercial fabrication resources.

Creation of these sculptures at the RJ Art studio starts with design of small maquettes, made with colored papers and painted aluminum. Materials used for the sculptures include corrosion resistant stainless steel, (automotive/aerospace ) paint/finish, and a resilient base/mounting composite construction. This ensures resiliency of a construction that has robust , colorful artwork but also requires minimal maintenance for outdoor use. Final finishing and assembly onto base/mounting is done in the certified facilities of JD Henley Creations/Byron MN.

Exploring curved space

The sculptural works shown as the "Curved Space " series are new and have been made in the last two years. They represent the work of my studio RJ Art .
Making art is an endeavor that came along later in life as my education (chemistry and biophysics) and work career have been in scientific research, technology development, and industrial design and manufacturing. Though mostly showing a left-brained orientation, it’s a background that is helpful in creation of sculptural design and fabrication! Familiarity with materials and processing is critical for creation of sculptural forms that are minimal in maintenance, resilient to weather and sun, flexible for kinetic behavior in the wind, and structurally sound.

My transition to a more right-brained venture in the creative arts was motivated mostly by the onset of the Covid pandemic.
Also I had a life-long interest in art and architecture as well as familiarity with the process and thrills of art-making: my mother (Johanna Jordan) was a prominent sculptor in So.California during the ‘70s –‘90s and there was a lot of art-making and art-speak around the house! Johanna had transitioned from painting to sculpture earlier, and she made extensive use of color highlighting in her sculptural works. I like this approach and have ended up embracing this practice in my work. I also like the work of Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Alexander Calder, Constantine Brancusi, as well as the architectural creations of John Lautner and Frank Gehry.

In the midst of Covid, art-creation was salvation, empowering, and it was resistance. “What can I do with what I have”, “I wonder if I can do that?”. It was a way to connect with family, friends, public, to express hope and create beauty. I found that spontaneous impressions offered by others---all people, chosen randomly----were perceptive and valuable, because they were honest and provided a good measure of my effectiveness of creating what I wished.

Inspiration for my work comes from observing the natural world – it’s form, motion, structural substance, and properties of natural light. The sculptures are studies in positive and negative space balance, and the transformations of spatial relationships of painted figures on curved surfaces. In this spirit all sculptures are made for interior as well as exterior use .

I hope that these creations will intrigue, lift the spirit, and bring joy to people’s lives.
