San Diego artist Dan Olfe's work combines digital art with tapestry and quilt art. To create the design for the quilt "San Diego Public Library #1," Dan used his own layered photographs of the Central library dome recreated on fabric, resulting in an image that is both recognizable and abstract. Level One recently helped Aesthetics add this piece to the Scripps La Jolla Prebys Cardiovascular Institute as another beautiful piece in their Healing Arts Signature Collection.

Unique, one-of-a-kind art quilts

Although art was an important part of my early life, my college education was in engineering and physics. I started making art quilts in 1997, after a career as an engineering professor at the University of California, San Diego. I selected quilts for my art medium because in our home my wife and I have always enjoyed fiber art for its warmth and color.

Because of my technical background, it was natural for me to create my designs on a computer. Although my early designs were created using a variety of 2-D and 3-D software programs, in recent years I have primarily used Photoshop to modify and layer my photos and abstract images. After my designs are digitally printed on cloth, I use a sewing machine to create a quilted wall hanging.

My art has been juried into over forty national/international art quilt exhibitions.
