I enjoy creating artworks that tell a story. While exploring New York City and following the book “Forgotten New York”, I discovered a beautiful, abandoned sugar refinery in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The Revere Sugar Refinery. It reminded me of all our stories that once were. The factory occupied an entire pier and was the livelihood of the community; it was now closed and abandoned. I returned to my studio and created several pieces, one being, “Ruins Past, Future Possibilities”. I combine both light and shadow,; reminding us of our past imbued with hope for the future. When I returned to the site within the year, the entire refinery had been torn down. I was moved by how such a large structural presence could completely vanish into thin air. I hope some of the work I create preserves our stories and memories that create connection with each through the unforgotten past.
