Rudder 511 - Paintings

Price $2,000

This artwork came out of a period of depression for the artist, when all before him was a great darkness. Hence the large dark central shape. However this, and the two similar paintings, from the same time, far from represent depression. The dark shapes take the form of rudders, steering him to a better place. This sense of hope and escape is confirmed with the playfulness of the surrounding shapes and marks.
The three works Untitled 511, 512 and 513 unmistakably mark the route to recovery. 81 x 81 cm

I’m trying to tap into my unconscious. I start painting, with only a loose intention of what I want the piece to be. I want the painting to end with the idea rather than start with it. I might be working with several inspirations simultaneously and so I like people to see different things in the finished work. What interests me is the emotional response to a painting void of depiction.

I am primarily self taught. Although I studied art at a further education college in London, I also had an interest in drama. A three year course at East Fifteen Acting School led to an extensive career in film TV and theatre. It was only with the move to Brighton on the South Coast that I took up painting again, inspired by the expansive sky and ever changing seascapes. The work has moved on from those initial inspirations but I think the Influence of coastal life is still evident in my current paintings.
