Re-examining the Landscape, acrylic ink on paper, 37.5 x 26 in. (unframed), 2017.

“Re-examining the Landscape” was an exploration in process and the ways digital media could be used as a resource for drawing and painting. After mapping out the sketch for this landscape based on the original photograph, I decided to zoom in on the photograph on the computer and work on the drawing in small sections. I would also not allow myself to view the image in its entirety until the drawing was complete. By zooming in on the photograph I was able to see the pixilation and shifts of colour of small details blown up to a larger scale in a way that allowed me to work more abstractly and create a level on distortion in the image that when finally completed would otherwise look realistic. My goal with this drawing was not to create a realistic image based on a photograph, but rather to break the image down and examine each and every piece before putting it back together again. I wanted to capture the abstract shapes and colours that exist in nature that normally go unnoticed.
