This piece is a sumi-e (Japanese Brush Painting) in my series of minimalist zen artworks. I used traditional soot ink and powerful brush strokes, as I do in all my paintings, in order to create a lasting visual impression. Art buyers and art lovers often remark on my interpretation of traditional Asian masters as I pay homage to their artistic vision but have a contemporary modern twist in my own art.
"Raven's Call" is a giclee reproduction of an original sumi-e and watercolour painting by professional artist Brazen Edwards, using Epson Ultrachrome professional archival ink printed on Somerset Velvet, which has the look and feel of watercolour paper.
Ravens show remarkable intelligence, and Aesop's fable of "The Crow and the Pitcher" shows that humans have long viewed the raven as an intelligent bird. Over the centuries, it has been the subject of mythology, folklore, art and literature. In many indigenous cultures, including those of Scandinavia, ancient Ireland and Wales, Bhutan, the northwest coast of North America, Siberia and northeast Asia, the Common Raven has been revered as a spiritual figure or god.
