Postpartum Baptism is a part of a series of free form drawings titled Still Life.

Still Life re-contextualizes the traditional meaning of a still life by using the Still Life genre to contemplate the meaning of stillness in art-making, intimate discourse, introspection of personal and ancestral history, spirituality, and meditation. My gouache and colored pencil drawings become assemblages or collages symbolic of these contemplations and the different spiritual influences in my life. The artwork in Still Life specifically references the transmutation of death and rebirth, intimate family-based faith, practices and heirlooms, and my personal relationship to ritual.

Contemporary Abstract Artist

Deanna Mance is a self taught abstract artist whose work references the transmutation of death and rebirth, introspection of personal and ancestral history, and her relationships to spirituality and ritual. She uses freehand techniques and spontaneous mark making as a tool that allows the work to build and grow without the restrictions of self awareness or premeditation. Through this approach, she embraces expressions of the unconscious
and it's unpredictable qualities in her work. Part of her practice includes salvaging found materials that either become integrated within the art making or collected as a source of inspiration. She’s creatively fueled by mythology, the constraints of limited materials and the act of improvisation throughout her process.
