Material: bone china porcelain | diameter 22 cm, height 15 cm | fabric cord. Includes a custom porcelain canopy.

This Pendant comes with a recessed hole in the bottom that for the rest is completely closed but translucent. The hole provides more downwards directed light but prevents glaring.

The clear forms of the lamp have been modeled in clay by hand, thus receiving its characteristic somewhat irregular surface and form. The closed form (the underside is closed or has a recessed hole in it) initially seems solid, monumental. Then follows the unexpected transparency, where the material comes to life by the light.

The lamps are manually produced in the studio. In the process each casting gets its own ‘drawing’ that consists of drips, drops, airbubbles, pinholes or other irregularities, which is only revealed by light. In addition the finishing and the firing process affect the final form. Each lamp is therefore unique.

Sculptural ceramic lighting. Handmade in refined translucent porcelain.

The lamps by Bergontwerp are produced manually in the artist’s own studio, cast in an extraordinary translucent, high quality porcelain; so-called ‘bone china’ or ivory porcelain.
This material is often associated with classic, refined English tableware, but the sculptural design makes it appear solid and monumental. The unglazed bone china in this object – with it’s irreular shape and ‘skin’ – has a solid appearance which creates an intriguing tension with the semi-opaque qualities of the porcelain.
Each casting has a distinct design, which only becomes visible when the form is illuminated from within. Moreover, the finishing and the firing processes influence the final shape and surface of the lights. Each light is therefore unique.
