Reminiscent of architecture from the far east, this design developed from experiments with inflating steel, and an ongoing desire to discover exciting new forms with the process.

To create the piece, pairs of flat hexagonal sheets are welded along their edges with rings between them, creating an airtight vessel. Pressurised water is injected into the vessel, causing the hexagons to inflate until they have a cushion-like shape. After inflation, the water is drained and internal moisture purged with heat to prevent rust.

The piece is finished first with a high gloss black, then buffed with graphite powder. This imbues the surface with a mirror like shine that catches and reflects surrounding light, highlighting the unique appearance of inflated steel.
