These platers are something truly special. Each piece is fired individually in the obvara style, a raku-like technique originating from Northern Europe. Each planter is heated in the kiln until its glowing red hot, then taken out of the heat and immediately plunged into a slurry of yeast, milk and flour (I use my leftover sourdough starter for this) The protein and sugar in the mixture burns onto the surface creating a beautiful and entirely individual mottling.

No two pieces are entirely alike.

These are slightly porous, and will draw water out of the soil. I recommend placing them on a tray.

David Meiklejohn's ceramics emphasize the natural qualities of clay. Often using discarded or scavenged materials, his work mixes a high attention to craft and form with unexpected and spontaneous textures, finishes and techniques.
