In designing this chair I wanted to best utilize the best and most practical aspects of the classical Windsor chair and apply them in contemporary proportion. The genius of the classical Windsor is in its efficient construction, every part is structural and built to best utilize the properties of select wood species.
The fan back is constructed of riven spindles. In riving spindles by hand the maker must follow the grain of each piece of wood resulting in a light, strong and flexible spindle. These spindles flex and contour to users back providing a very comfortable sit with good lower back support.
The seat, hand carved for comfort, becomes an import piece of the chair's structure in supporting the back and also the chair legs which are joined to it at a compound splay. The angle at which the chair legs join into the seat creates a pyramid form. This very strong form, supports the chair while remaining physically light.
Dimensions
Height: 35.5 in. (90.17 cm)
Width: 19 in. (48.26 cm)
Depth: 19 in. (48.26 cm)
