This is Namaka - Goddess of the Ocean, the older sister of the volcano goddess Pele. The powerful, fluid, immense, mother of the oceans.
Each of my wood sculpture designs come to me in meditation or visualization. Namaka came to me one day while I was paddling out to the Mokulula islets off the eastern coast of Oahu, Hawaii. I could sense the energy of the currents, tides, swells, and saw this image in my mind as the movement of Her.
This vertical wall hanging wooden sculpture is hand cut with my jig saw out of solid Australian Cedarwood (Toon) slabs. The wood species originates in Australia and was one of the many species of trees imported to Hawaii in the past century. After the design is cut out, I then carve and sand the details with grinders, Dremel, and by hand. These are then gilded with gold and copper foils, painted with iridescent tinted wax paints, mounted over mirror glass, and finished with a special hand rubbed polyurethane.
They come ready to hang with a French cleat system which should be professionally mounted to studs in a wall. The wood can be cared for with Henry's Orange Oil and Beeswax rub which will bring the wood grain back to its original beauty. The glass cleaned with a simple 70% alcohol spray directly on a rag then used to clean the glass.
PLEASE NOTE: This Architectural Panel takes 5 to 7 weeks for to make and an additional 1-2 for shipping. Custom orders and designs are welcome.
