This project wants to honor the fundamental role of all those women behind fishermen in Les Cases d’Alcanar (my hometown). Apart from led all the familiar matters, among their several daily tasks, they used to sit down on traditional chairs in the street and mend fish nets, while they talked among them.
When I was a child, fishing was one of the most important business in my hometown. It was very common to see menders in the street in front of their houses, or in the harbor next to the boats. This is an unforgettable memory for me.
Unfortunately, fishing in small villages has been lost relevance in the economy and, as a consequence, all those traditions, arts and works related with traditional fishing have been lost too.
As I could not let that all these traditions were forgotten, some years ago, I started this project and, finally, I could do it thanks to the support given by the Neighboring Association of Les Cases, the wall’s owners and the Youth Council of Alcanar’s Townhall.
This mural is 15 meters high and 10 meters width approximately. I painted it in a record time thanks to the inestimable help of my partner, LaPiNXe, and my official photographer, Carolina Rovira, who took photos of every single detail during 5 days of work.
In addition to the big mural of “Remendadores d’un poble menut”, I could also paint another small mural next to it: “El net pescador” (“The fisherman’s grandson”). I joined past and present in the same space, remembering the origins and, at the same time, looking into the future that never forgets its roots.
Nowadays, there are 3 urban art works in Les Cases d’Alcanar painted by me: “Lo Poble” (The Village), located in Barranc’s square (a mural) and the other two recent incorporations “Remendadores d’un poble menut” and “El net pescador”, both of them located in Hort Adell’s parking.
Finally, I wanted to thanks to the citizens of Les Cases d’Alcanar, who even before of finishing the mural appreciate it so much. They often see in the picture a relative or someone who they knew in the past. Thanks to them, today the mender of the mural has become the grandma of everybody.
