One City Building "Walking One City"
The artwork in each of the 13 residential floors and the gym was a commission by ETD (Eileen
Tognini Designs) to create unique pieces for each of the hallways of the One City building to
enhance the architectural qualities of this classical building and bring a new perspective while
looking at the City of Philadelphia. This series aim to rediscover Philadelphia by strolling around to uncover the old and the new, the seen and unseen and all the surprises that come when you walk around looking up and exploring Philadelphia. Each panel describes a relationship between two buildings in the city and how they speak to each
other in their present and past.
Each panel is composed of three layers. Each layer is laser-engraved on plexiglass and hand-colored
with a unique color created for each one of the panels. Each of the layers in each
panel depicts two significant landmark buildings that are related to each other. For instance,
the renderings of the Kimmel Center and John Coltrane’s House on North 33rd Philadelphia
are juxtaposed as the two landmarks are very significant in the Philadelphia music and cultural
scenes, each one in their own time. The third layer in the front shows architectural details
from the One City building - a cornice, an iron window, a carving in the façade. The panels in
the back are mirrors reflecting back the viewer’s image making this viewer part of the work.
