Malumbra is a vessel for light. A thin cylindrical shell uniformly diffuses light onto a finned structural frame which in turn reflects it into the surrounding space. The play of graduated brightness and shadows changes with every viewing point of the biomorphic geometry. The lamp also casts a disc of more intense light centrally downwards.

The pendant consists of a lamp holder and a lampshade. A matt black braided cotton cable and a black matt steel ceiling rose complete the lamp. High quality materials of natural, sustainable origin like rice paper and wood are assembled and finished by hand. Made to order in our UK atelier.

Comes with a 3.3 ft long cable as standard. Please enquire if different lengths are required.

Ideas shaped

discrete is the “unbrand” name for a collection of objects for the home by Luca Plattner. Romantically, discrete stands for the spaces in between and those beyond – physical spaces and intangible ones, in between the folds of the mundane and beyond the horizon of the familiar.

The term “discrete” is borrowed from the natural sciences, where it refers to models that help us understand our complex world. In this powerful approach to exploring beyond the boundaries of our experience, the infinite and continuous reality is broken down into little, discrete steps.

Decades ago Luca studied to be an experimental scientist. He learned methods to probe the nature of things and built tools to confirm hypotheses about the physical world. An inclination towards making led him to conceive and prototype many one-of-a-kind devices during his subsequent career in industrial research and development.

Over time he developed an interest in the products that populate living spaces and in the cultural and practical aspects of their emergence and use. An unshakeable fondness for giving form to ideas has ultimately resulted in the work that led to discrete.

The research at the far end of scientific inquiry and Luca’s experience with prototyping are foundational to discrete’s designs and their ambition to engage our perception and serve functional purposes well at the same time.
