Luminosity 8, Illuminated Ink work with remote control
I love to make art with no sense of space or time, yet feels new and familiar in the same instance. My Luminosity Series takes my ink works to a new level, complete with remote-controlled LED lights. As an artist, I am ever seeking and exploring. Working on acrylic panels with ink, as seen in my Gaia Series, allows the ambient light to enter the works through the translucent acrylic panel, giving depth. As I worked, I thought about how else I could add luminosity to my ink works. Through experimentation, I discovered that LED lights were a perfect option for me. As an additional element in this series, I have snuggled trash: post-consumer plastic bags as added color washes and texture and keep them out of the landfill. Because of the sweet remote control you receive, you control the atmosphere you would like to create. You can set the brightness and light display pattern with a click of a button! At night, these works offer a completely different experience as their inner glow shines from behind the metallic sediments. Finally, each Luminosity work has a tiny talisman to imbue these works with the most powerful force on Earth: love.
Luminosity 8 has blue hues with platinum accents painted on a 1/8 inch milky acrylic panel, sealed with a 1/8 inch clear acrylic panel on top. Under this is another 1/8 inch milky acrylic panel and two sets of remote-controlled LED lights, a pink plastic dry-cleaning bag, and a Love Note, secured with aluminum stand-offs, wired for hanging with airplane wire, with a 480lb—the breaking point. She is set to be hung vertically or horizontally because of the hanging system I designed. It is the tension created by this hanging system that bends the panels convexly. This accentuates the gold shimmer on the surface and allows ambient light to enter behind the work, giving the translucent panel a secondary depth and luminosity. Luminosity 8 is one of a kind and was delivered ready for installation with a Certificate of Authenticity documenting all salient details.
More information about my ink works: I pour pools of ink and, for lack of a better explanation, dance with my panel as the colors blend and shift across the surface. I then overlay a clear acrylic panel to protect the gold sediments. I chose to work with ink on translucent panels because I wanted to find another dimension of luminosity compared to my ink works on paper. The translucent panel adds depth and light that I do not have access to when working on opaque surfaces.
I have created my own hanging system by adapting the traditional stand-off system: I secure the panels together at each corner with aluminum caps and bolts. These bolts serve as part of my hanging system. On the back, I wrap airplane cable around the bolts, creating an x around which I add a small loop of the same cable. This loop secures easily to a traditional picture hanger on the wall.
