Nature inspired
Growing up in the country, in upstate New York I spent all my free time outside or making things. Raised by very creative and nature centric parents, nature was my constant companion.
Nature is alive and constantly in flux. I am fascinated by the energy, forms, and colors found in nature and everything they communicate. I sometimes work with paint in its fluid form and manipulate it to imitate natural occurrences such as the formation of ice, decay of natural materials and rushing water. I am in partnership with the laws of nature when I allow the paint to run, puddle and evaporate. I also employ many tools to create marks and patterns that emulate patterns found in nature. I am striving for an image that simulates the magic of light flickering through the trees or glistening on the water’s surface.
Sculpture and installation are a way to break out of the rectangle. Suspended cut outs of transparent colored acrylic sway gently and light passing through transfers color to nearby walls. Paintings that are made on layers of transparent material can be combined with acrylic cut outs as the shapes are repeated in both. Installations create an exuberant statement that encompasses everything I love about nature: energy, movement, color, and emotion.
