This is an authentic, two-handled, handmade "Natla", which I formed from a slab of grey stoneware, and decorated with sgraffito designs. The "Natla" is used for washing hands before eating, it's a tradition among the religious Jewish. The round shape, which comes down to a squared-off bottom gives a real organic almost paper sack illusion.
The Natla is signed by me underneath.
* Sgraffito: a form of decoration made by scratching through a surface to reveal a lower layer of a contrasting color, typically done in plaster or stucco on walls, or in slip-on ceramics before firing.
Why a two-handled washing cup?
After the first hand is washed, it is clean and pure. The unwashed hand, however, is not. If the two hands touch after the first hand was washed, it is necessary to rewash the first one. A two-handled cup is used to make the process simpler, making it easier to avoid the hands touching each other.
DETAILS:
Hand-folded from a slab of gray stoneware
Hand-carved designs using sgraffito* technique
Clear, non-toxic, matte glaze
Fired in a kiln at 1200 degrees Celsius
Height: 3.5" //9 cm
Diameter: 4" // 10 cm
Volume 750 ml
