In this 20’ x 20” landscape encaustic painting, the artist applied selected areas of gold leaf to the surface of the painting, which gives it a warm, reflective quality.
Encaustic paintings are made with layers of wax that are fused together with a torch. It is one of the oldest painting techniques known to man, and encaustics have a very earthy and alluring surface unlike any other form of painting.
This piece depicts ripples and reflections of water that catch the light. The shimmers are rendered in shades of blue and green, with hints of gray to suggest depth and movement.
To create the shimmering effect, the artist adds layers of translucent wax to build up color and texture. The light bounces off the surface of the painting, highlighting the gold leaf and creating a luminous, almost otherworldly effect.
