This sculptural light excels at elevating a softly lit space with a distinct, original presence and quality craftsmanship. Thick walls and dense masses convey rugged strength, while asymmetric precariousness suggest playfulness and vulnerability. Light passes out the ends, and also out of artfully placed perforations, allowing lovely swashes of light to adorn the walls around it.
A friend brought me this Poplar log almost 2 years before I carved it. It had a small crack running the length that I saw as an opportunity, so I put it in the sun for many months encouraging the crack to deepen. After carving it out, the crack opened almost completely, allowing light to pass through in places. I also kept a torn edge where the log was not cut completely through. You can see that in the left side. The black finish is a combo of burning and India Ink. The interior gets it’s shine and color from many coats of shellac. The small brass circle near the base is a touch-sensitive off/on switch.
There are two puck lights mounted in the center- one pointing towards each end. It's accompanied by an information sheet that lists the bulb-type needed and directions on how to change them.
