The Cereus night blooming cactus is common here in Arizona. Their blooms open at night and start to close as soon as the sun rises. The blooms usually open for only a single night although the plant usually puts out multiple flowers over several weeks. It is really special when you get to see these and involves being up early. The gradation of colors in these seemed as if they were glowing from within and I wanted to further emphasize that with the dark background.

The beauty of everyday objects captured in a contemporary realistic style

In our busy lives we rush past so many captivating and beautiful scenes. I try to slow life down and capture some of these ordinary but beautiful moments. Sometimes I think I’m trying to stop the passage of time by depicting the perfect bloom or the mesmerizing shadow that will soon be gone. Although some of my work is composed like a traditional still life, many are enlarged beyond a normal scale. I shoot my own reference photos, and with camera in hand, I like to zoom in and explore the subtle textures and curves of an object until I start to lose the object itself. I use this same dramatic canvas filling perspective in my paintings. I look for areas where a shadow forms an interesting shape, the light glows through the flower petal, or the distorted reflection appears on the metal bowl.
I declared that I would be an artist when I was only 10 years old and have been creating ever since. My mother is an artist and art teacher so you might say, it was in my blood.
