Painted metal sculpture. Dance(Blue ,Silver ) by RJ Art

Collection: Curved Space Sculptures

The sculpture is a lively, kinetic pair of figures, perhaps engaged in a joyful gathering or dance. Dance (Blue , Silver) is a pairing of the blue (Dance I ) form with the unpainted Dance II form, where in the larger sculpture Dance II is mounted on it opposite edge .
Dance (Blue, Silver) is a robust outdoor sculpture, where the moving painted surface reflects and amplifies the dynamic surrounding environment.

Images show Dance (Blue, Silver ) in the context of a summer garden and winter park, with a video that captures its kinetic behavior in a mild summer breeze.

Design Concepts and Creation

Dance(Blue, Silver) is another example of our larger-scale sculpture offerings. It's approximately four (4) feet in height and it is listed in our offerings as made for order.
Scale to size ( approximately (5) feet ) is available for all of the pieces shown in the Curved Space series , with similar outdoor resilience and kinetic behavior. Pricing will be determined upon inquiry.

All of the works in this series usually are made first at studio size (e.g., 12 to 20 inch high) , and all can be readily fabricated to approximately five (5) feet in height. All pieces shown in the smaller (approx 20 inch size) , when scaled to large size, will show some degree of kinetic/wind behavior. (Scaling to approximately seven (7) feet high would be done with available contract commercial fabrication resources. )

Pricing for larger sizes of all other pieces will be determined upon inquiry.

Following studio design of sculptural forms and artwork, fabrication is completed with corrosion resistant stainless steel, (automotive/aerospace ) paint/finish, and a resilient base/mounting composite construction. This ensures resiliency of a construction that has robust , colorful artwork and requires minimal maintenance for outdoor use. Final finishing and assembly onto base/mounting is done in the certified facilities of JD Henley Creations/Byron MN. Defect-free, automotive quality (urethane/acrylic) paint finishes are applied under exclusive contract in the Twin Cities ( JD Henley Creations/Rochester MN) .

Exploring curved space

The sculptural works shown as the "Curved Space " series are new and have been made in the last two years. They represent the work of my studio RJ Art .
Making art is an endeavor that came along later in life as my education (chemistry and biophysics) and work career have been in scientific research, technology development, and industrial design and manufacturing. Though mostly showing a left-brained orientation, it’s a background that is helpful in creation of sculptural design and fabrication! Familiarity with materials and processing is critical for creation of sculptural forms that are minimal in maintenance, resilient to weather and sun, flexible for kinetic behavior in the wind, and structurally sound.

My transition to a more right-brained venture in the creative arts was motivated mostly by the onset of the Covid pandemic.
Also I had a life-long interest in art and architecture as well as familiarity with the process and thrills of art-making: my mother (Johanna Jordan) was a prominent sculptor in So.California during the ‘70s –‘90s and there was a lot of art-making and art-speak around the house! Johanna had transitioned from painting to sculpture earlier, and she made extensive use of color highlighting in her sculptural works. I like this approach and have ended up embracing this practice in my work. I also like the work of Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Alexander Calder, Constantine Brancusi, as well as the architectural creations of John Lautner and Frank Gehry.

In the midst of Covid, art-creation was salvation, empowering, and it was resistance. “What can I do with what I have”, “I wonder if I can do that?”. It was a way to connect with family, friends, public, to express hope and create beauty. I found that spontaneous impressions offered by others---all people, chosen randomly----were perceptive and valuable, because they were honest and provided a good measure of my effectiveness of creating what I wished.

Inspiration for my work comes from observing the natural world – it’s form, motion, structural substance, and properties of natural light. The sculptures are studies in positive and negative space balance, and the transformations of spatial relationships of painted figures on curved surfaces. In this spirit all sculptures are made for interior as well as exterior use .

I hope that these creations will intrigue, lift the spirit, and bring joy to people’s lives.
