This dining table takes inspiration from the traditional Japanese bell tower in its use of a splayed leg structure that appears to feature square section legs. Upon closer inspection one realizes that the legs are a parallelogram shape, unique to this type of structure, the parallelogram appears square when applied to a structure splayed in two directions.
This table is shown in quarter sawn walnut, and the tabletop is 54" wide by 84" long, however this table can be made practically any size requested out to approximately 120" long x 60" wide. The pricing shown is for the 54" x 84" size.
The table's legs run diagonally and in doing so they remain mostly out of the way, the structure eliminates the need for lower stretchers and yet it is extraordinarily strong considering how light way and out of the way the main structure is. This table does not wiggle, it remains very stabile when diners push away from their seat, much more so than anything less than exceptionally heavy upright legged tables.
I use a combination of oil and 'button' shellac to finish this table, both finishes are harmless, but require the use of coasters. A commercial finish can be applied upon request, but I highly recommend this hand rubbed shellac finish made without harsh chemicals from natural products and processes. Shellac, while delicate, is beautiful and traditional in its use, the earliest uses of shellac as a finish date back 3000 years.
