Circles On Field - Paintings
Price $1,000
Painting: Acrylic on Wood.
24" x 12" x 1.5"
Acrylic Painting using a Faux encaustic technique and sculpture and woodworking techniques and tools. The circles and other areas of the paintings are carved into the wood surface with various sculpture and wood working tools. The altering of the painting surface is a technique I continue to experiment with in my paintings. The Faux encaustic effect is attained with golden acrylic mediums taught to me by Tad Van der Weele (now deceased) and Nancy Reyner who does workshops and demonstrations for Goldern Paints. The faux encaustic technique in this painting is used just to give the surface a slight waxy look. The theme of the painting "Circles" is highlighted throughout my work. Circles seem to be a healing element for all cultures including ancient and modern. Sometimes the circle is a visual symbol sometimes it's a dance or sometimes a sculptural memorial but all represent healing and health. This painting is also part of the colorfield series and is two panels which are permanently bolted together.
This painting series evolved from my work with sculpture and my love for the work of Mark Rothko. I use my stone sculpture tools to "texture" the wood panels that I paint on. The primary texture is done with my four and nine point chisels with a pneumatic air hammer which creates hundreds of indentations on the surface. Then I can screed pigment into the dimples of the panel and layer other colors over them creating complex yet simple color fields. Other sculpture tools are used as well such as die grinders, disk sanders, etc. Always striving to attain colors fields that one can get lost in.
