The Cedrus House is a delightfully simple and modern birdhouse design. The quality speaks for itself with clean slants, gentle curves and no exposed screw holes. It's made of unfinished cedar which is naturally rot and insect resistant. The roof is slightly elevated above the frame to allow for airflow. The overhang and slant help protect the birds against rain and wind.

The 1 ¼” hole size and interior dimensions are ideal for a long list of small north american birds and should be too small for most common predators.

Here are some North American birds that might consider making Cedrus House their home:

Chickadees (black-capped, siberian, mountain, chestnut-backed), Downy Woodpecker, Nuthatch (brown headed, red breasted, white breasted, pygmy), Tufted Titmouse, Wren (bewick, carolina, house, winter)

*Birdhouse only* - For stand suggestions read the mounting directions.

Assembly:

Place the copper stand-offs on top of the threaded inserts on the house and the holes in the roof over those. Use the thumb screws to screw in through the holes in the roof, through the copper stand-off pieces and into the house.
Gently hammer the dowel into the hole that can be used as a perch so that it is only sticking out about 1 ½”.

Directions for Mounting:

It is best to hang birdhouses on a metal pole or garden fence post. Hanging on a tree can leave the birds vulnerable to predators that can easily climb trees. We suggest mounting to a “universal pole kit” which is a metal pole with a bracket for screwing to the underside of the birdhouse. You can also screw a metal garden fence post to the back of the house or attach it to a wooden post.

ALWAYS PRE-DRILL YOUR HOLES to help prevent the soft cedar from splitting.

Most of the listed birds prefer a house to be at least 5’ off the ground and facing East or South. They prefer birdhouses to be attached to something sturdy and not swaying in the wind.

Made Cozy is a small, Massachusetts-based company that explores the cross-section of traditional crafting techniques and modern design in furniture and other household objects. We value products that are built to last and have a timeless yet playful aesthetic. We aim to blur the lines between sculpture and fine furniture.

Made:Cozy is owned and operated by Haviland Justice and Oliver Reams. We met as design students at Hampshire College. Wanting to find a way to design products that depart from an increasingly disposable mindset we drew inspiration from the relationships children have with their favorite stuffed animals. We thought back to how our favorite toys were washed when dirty, mended when torn, and kept safe to be passed down. We found this was because our favorite toys gave us a cozy feeling.

We want our products to bring that same feeling into adults' lives. We design and choose products that will not only be beautiful and long lasting but will give you that desire to care for and keep them because, after-all, they make you feel cozy.

Haviland ran a local reupholstery business for 6 years under the same name (Made:Cozy) and recently transitioned the business into this one where she gets to showcase the more sculptural side of furniture by designing and making a line furniture (and smaller home goods). We invite you to explore our online shop where we sell household objects. Our products are all designed in house and either made in our studio or with the help of local factories, artists, and craftspeople.

Our mission is to bring back lost hand skills to the world and make our products with transparency. We want to blend functionality with elegance and durability. The materials that we bring together are long lasting. We strive to make all aspects of our objects with materials that are sourced from sustainable and ethical places. We aim to fully understand materials and how they can be shaped to leave our customers feeling cozy and connected to our products. If you have questions about the process or materials used with any of our products feel free to contact us.

We do collaborate with other designers and makers! If you are an interior designer and are looking to customize one of our pieces for a client's home please reach out. If you are a furniture maker or woodworker yourself and would like to collaborate on the upholstery of your pieces feel free to contact as well.
