I use materials that I find in plenitude around the studio; surgical masks, old book parts, and monoprints I sew all these into grids and print and sew and print...
In Isabel Wilkerson’s book “Caste”, she references the census bureau which “announced its projection [in 2008] that by 2042, for the first time in American history, white would no longer be the majority...” The prospect is compelling and in anticipation, I created these sewn collages of skin tones loosely referencing city grids. I mixed more than seventy skin tone colors (inspired by the photographs of Angelica Dass in her ongoing project “Humanae.”) I learned how to generate each particular skin tone that tends to objectify the human, but in the studio, an equalization occurs that doesn’t exist in the world outside my studio. The mixing is an action that connects to the brain, so I can feel a cognitive and emotional shift. My hope is to continue to carry that feeling out of the studio.
