Breath Mountain I: Between Earth and Sky
cotton thread and burlap
72” x 49”

Breath Mountain is a series of pieces made with repetitive stitches and marks on textile or paper. A meditative process created in communion with my breath. The permeability of the fiber evokes a softness to a mountain while the many delicate marks combine to signify a symbol of strength.

I am enthralled by mountains - earth's natural monuments. Holy, majestic, powerful, and dangerous or hostile if attempting to climb – mountains are a sacred earth that climb into the sky accessing the divine and higher realms. The mountain symbol feels very potent and important right now, representing collective challenges we are facing. Breath by breath, moment by moment, we all have mountains we climb in our journey.

They are part of my BREATH MONUMENTS collection.

I make these monuments as creative temples to the breath and air, in a time when we are faced with crises of profound proportions: climate, environment, health, disconnection, anxiety and isolation. I’m interested in bringing awareness and visibility to something so vital to life…yet unseen and mostly taken for granted.

This work is available. It is also available as a similar commission in different size or color schemes. I love collaborating with collectors so please contact me to begin an inquiry.

Meditative mixed media fiber art guided by breath

Filiz Soyak is an interdisciplinary artist exploring themes of identity, memory, and time through painting, drawing, clay, fiber, and installation. After becoming a mother in 2016, her work turned further inward seeking meaning through stillness and by connecting to her intuition. Meditation and breath have become integral practices in her work.
Filiz was born in 1979 in Belgium to a Turkish father and Swedish mother. She spent most of her childhood in Belgium and Japan, before moving to the Northeast of the United States. Filiz found her comfort in creating early on, and art became the language that allowed her to process and adapt to so many different experiences.
Filiz earned a B.A. in Visual Art from the University of Vermont in 2001, followed by an M.Ed. in Visual Art Education from Lesley University in 2008. From 2004-2008 Filiz was a full-time resident and an active community member of the historical Fort Point Arts Community in Boston, Massachusetts. After spending a year in Amman, Jordan, then another year in Barbados, teaching art and design, Filiz landed in Brooklyn, New York in 2010. In 2017 she moved with her husband and young daughter from Brooklyn, to Hudson, New York to be closer to nature and to establish a slower, more grounded and conscious lifestyle.
