Boerum Hill Greek Revival, No. 1 - Interior Design

Scenic State Street is the locale of this Boerum Hill, Brooklyn rowhouse beauty. Originally split into a duplex and two single-floor apartments, we reconfigured the layout so this active family of four could take over the parlor, second and third floors leaving the garden level for tenants. Because the existing house was separated into three apartments, the original curving wood handrail had been removed. We seized the opportunity to design a modern interpretation of the traditional row house balustrade using standard steel angles installed in a sculptural format. The unique system of balusters with a beautiful new mahogany handrail winds its way elegantly through the house. The particular combination of steel and wood echoes the midcentury furniture pieces one of the homeowners had acquired from her family.
The sleek kitchen design including an island, bar and pantry was brought to life by Henry Built. Upper cabinets feature artfully arranged wood veneer while lower ones showcase durable laminate in a warm gray. A custom light fixture snakes across the ceiling connecting the dining zone with the island and prep spaces. The wood-burning fireplaces were completely modernized with custom mantels. We finished Black meteorite granite in the living room to look and feel like hand-tooled vintage leather. A Venetian plaster fireplace facade in the family room blends seamlessly into a bookcase with storage on either side.
