Engraved steel with heat colors. 61" W
This salmon metal wall art was inspired by the ocean stage of the adult coho salmon's lifecycle.
It depicts the moon's pull, the cycle of day and night, the sun, the stars, and the moon phases. And the life of salmon in the ebb and flow of the open ocean; between the tides and the salmon's imminent return to the headwaters from whence they came.
I made the engraved and heat-colored metal wall art using decorative techniques I've been developing for the last 30 years or so. After enlarging the drawing onto plasma cut 14 gauge steel, I engrave it into the metal using a pneumatic engraver and grinding burrs.
I then use various abrasives to grind the metal's surface to create grinding patterns and textures, suggest the forms and movement and the overall feeling I want to capture. The result is akin to a metal art painting.
'Between the Tides' is available in a limited edition of seven. I made the first wall panel in the limited edition for the Best Western Bidarka Inn of Homer, Alaska, where it greets visitors from behind the reception desk.
You can special order your version of this design specially sized to fit your space. If you prefer, I can even make it as a wall sculpture with multiple layers of heat-colored metal and wood.
If you're looking for a coffee table, I can make it as the engraved steel top for a decorative coffee table.
