• 18x24” illuminated map in a handmade walnut frame.
• Made to order in New York’s Hudson River Valley.
• About the map: illustrated by Parsons & Atwater. The Equitable Life Assurance Society Of The United States paid lithographers Currier & Ives for a map that included their building at 120 Broadway, a particularly handsome piece of 140-year-old spon-con. Facing north from Battery Park: steamships crowd New York Harbor, horse-drawn carriages clop up Broadway, Central Park recedes into the distance, agrarian New Jersey stretches west. 140 years ago the steeples of St. Paul’s, St. Patrick’s and Trinity Church dwarfed the commercial buildings.
• Materials: hand-joined walnut, 12V LED lightbox (~18 watt draw), 3,600 DPI film, glazed with low-glare glass. Includes 12V power supply.

Get lost in ultra-detailed backlit installation maps.

I'm Evan Applegate and I create spectacular wall maps in my Hudson Valley studio, specializing in 3,600 DPI custom cartography backlit in lamplight spectra: all the detail of a paper map with an inviting glow.

Maps on LCD displays are impoverished, low resolution, glowing in harsh frequencies that tire the eyes. The best way to experience maps is at scale, an arresting presentation that fills your vision while inviting a closer look, enhanced by gentle color-filtered LEDs that welcome instead of repel.

I've made maps for National Geographic, Bloomberg Philanthropies and other big orgs, at scales ranging from a magazine page to an entire wall. I'm interested in combining rich, dense cartography with rich, dense media: film, wood, embroidery, metal.

Working together looks like this:
1) We discuss your project’s size, map style, map colors, geographies to be depicted and frame finishes.
2) You receive draft maps and renders.
3) When you approve the final design, 3-8 weeks later your installer receives well-packed maps, hanging cleats and power supplies.
