Atascadero Wall Hanging

Unavailable

Quilting cotton wall hanging inspired by the rolling golden hills of central California made for the book Simple Geometric Quilting.

The Atascadero Wall Hanging takes the traditional log cabin quilt block and restructures it into an unexpected pennant shape that’s perfect as a wall hanging. I pictured the Atascadero Wall Hanging in a light-filled home that exudes “California cool,” which led me to the sunny, golden hour colors, classic but modern shape and minimalist matchstick quilting.

STORY
With years of drought under its belt, the hills of California have turned from green to gold. As devastating as the lack of water in California is, the Golden State really lives up to its name, especially during golden hour. The sun lights up the hills, accentuating the yellows, caramels and golds. With the Atascadero Wall Hanging, named after a small town in Central California surrounded by rolling hills, I wanted to use the shape and colors to mimic the gentle peaks and the layers of golden sunshine on the hills.

Vacilando is a design and production studio dedicated to making beautiful, useful objects while modernizing the tradition of American Craftsmanship.

Raised in Texas and London by two architect parents, Laura spent several years in New York City studying art history and painting before embarking on a year-long road trip adventure around the U.S. in 2013. Six years of traveling and two Airstream later, She now calls the Texas Hill Country home.

Completely self taught (with the help of the internet), Laura discovered the medium of textiles on the road and fell in love with the utility and potential of the craft. With a couple years of quilting under her belt and a dream of designing and making quilts all day, she launched Vacilando in February of 2015.

Endlessly eager to explore new places, wander through markets, and discover interesting colors and textures in nature, Laura draws inspiration from her travels and translates them into the modern minimalist designs that Vacilando is known for.
